Mealplana has access to multiple food and nutritional databases. The databases allow you to query an item (i.e. banana) and get accurate nutritional values, and portion size data.
At the time of writing this article, we have access to USDA, US Branded products, AUSNUT, and UK food databases. We may add further food databases in the future.
When you query the multiple food databases, you should be able to find most products that are typically available in a supermarket. That being said, there may be specific products that are not available in the database. These can include:
- Local products that are not commonly consumed in the US, UK, or Australia
- Highly specific products
- Specific brands of a particular food item
When you cannot find an item in the database, or if you disagree with the nutritional content of a particular item you have found in the database, you can create your own custom foods.
You can accumulate a collection of custom foods to use within recipes and meal plans. When you create a custom food, you can specify macronutrient and micronutrient content, as well as portion sizes.
You only need to create a particular food item once, then you can re-use it multiple times within recipes or meal plans. If there are specific items you use often in plans, feel free to set them up as custom foods to save time when using Mealplana.
